Land Rover Defender
Land Rover Defender
Bearings, seals & timingReconditioning covers crankshaft bearings, injector seals, timing component inspection and a full gasket set on high-mileage Defenders.
Reconditioned Land Rover engines from our Ilford workshop cover the complete range: Defender ZSD-422, Discovery 3, 4 and 5, Discovery Sport and Freelander 2. Every unit leaves compression-tested, oil pressure verified, bench run, and backed by a written warranty on parts and labour.
Reconditioned Land Rover engines and "used engines" are not the same product. Knowing the difference is the first step in protecting your vehicle.
A used Land Rover engine is a second-hand unit of unknown history, unknown wear and unknown oil maintenance. A reconditioned Land Rover engine is your original engine, or an exchange unit, fully stripped, measured, machined to tolerance, and rebuilt with new components to OEM specification.
Reconditioning at our Ilford workshop is carried out by a team with over 20 years of experience working exclusively on Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar engines. It is not a general mechanical job; it is specialist work carried out by technicians who know these engines by engine code, by failure pattern, and by what OEM specification for each unit actually requires.
Our engine reconditioning sits alongside our full Land Rover engine rebuild service, so whichever route your engine needs, it is handled under one roof.
Every reconditioned Land Rover engine leaves our workshop compression-tested, oil pressure verified, bench run, and backed by a written warranty on parts and labour.
Browse reconditioned enginesLand Rover engine reconditioning at our Ilford workshop covers every internal component that determines engine longevity. The process for every engine includes:
Specialists do not shortcut this process. Every component above is addressed on every engine, not selectively applied depending on what the customer can see from the outside.
We cover every engine code in the Land Rover range. Specialists who work exclusively on JLR understand that each engine code has a distinct reconditioning profile.
Land Rover Defender
Reconditioning covers crankshaft bearings, injector seals, timing component inspection and a full gasket set on high-mileage Defenders.
Land Rover Discovery 3
Focus on the timing chain kit, crankshaft bearings, piston rings and a cylinder head skim, addressing chain stretch from long service intervals.
Land Rover Discovery 4
High-pressure fuel system seals, crankshaft bearings, timing chain and coolant gallery inspection for corrosion from non-OAT coolant.
Land Rover Discovery 5
Ingenium timing chain tensioner replacement, piston rings, oil pump and a cylinder head pressure test on the 204DTA, 204DTD, 306DT and 306PS.
Land Rover Discovery Sport
Timing chain kit, piston ring replacement and inlet valve carbon inspection on the petrol units across the Ingenium range.
Land Rover Freelander 2
Mandatory timing belt kit, head gasket, crankshaft bearings and piston rings. On the 224DT the belt drives the oil and water pump.
The Freelander 2 224DT requires mandatory timing belt replacement as part of every reconditioning. The belt drives the oil pump and water pump: a worn belt does not cause valve damage alone, it causes immediate oil pressure loss and catastrophic seizure. Every 224DT that leaves our workshop has a new timing belt kit, oil pump inspection and water pump replacement as standard.
The Ingenium 204DTA and 204DTD fitted to Discovery 5 and Discovery Sport require a specific OAT coolant specification, the correct oil viscosity (0W-30 STJLR.03.5007) and confirmed timing chain tensioner replacement. Reconditioned with the wrong oil spec, these engines develop timing chain wear within 10,000 miles, so we confirm the correct oil and coolant specifications in writing before every Ingenium engine is returned.
Reconditioned Land Rover gearboxes are available alongside reconditioned engines. The ZF 8-speed automatic fitted to Discovery 4, Discovery 5 and Range Rover Sport is the gearbox we recondition most often; the ZF 6-speed fitted to the earlier Discovery 3 and Freelander 2 is the second most common.
Gearbox reconditioning covers the full process: solenoid pack replacement, clutch pack inspection and replacement, torque converter assessment, valve body reconditioning, a transmission fluid flush with the correct ZF-approved fluid, and a post-reconditioning test drive. Addressed properly, a reconditioned gearbox will not return the harsh shifting, delayed engagement or slip symptoms that drove the original owner to seek reconditioning.
Engine and gearbox reconditioning carried out together means one mobilisation, one collection and return, and one workshop accountable for both drivetrain components on your vehicle.
Have your engine and gearbox reconditioned together and deal with a single specialist who stands behind the whole drivetrain.
Ask about a gearbox quoteLand Rover engines from a general reconditioning firm and reconditioned engines from a specialist who works exclusively on JLR are not equivalent, even when the component replacement list looks the same on paper.
Specialists who work on these engines every day know the model-specific failure patterns that a general firm misses. A reconditioned engine returned to a vehicle with an unaddressed EGR system, or the wrong coolant left in the galleries, will fail prematurely no matter how good the internal rebuild was.
Every reconditioned engine comes with documentation covering every component replaced, every measurement taken, all machining carried out, and the post-reconditioning test results. That documentation travels with the vehicle. Warranty claims are handled by the same technicians who did the work, not by a call centre or a parts supplier.
Send your registration and the fault, and we will give you a written reconditioning quote.
Reconditioned Land Rover engines are available in two forms. Which route is right is confirmed after the strip-down assessment, not before, and never over the phone.
The preferred option where the block is serviceable. Reconditioning your original engine preserves the vehicle's matching numbers, which carry value at resale and for insurance on older Defender and Discovery 3 owners. It also produces documented measurement data specific to that engine, giving you a complete history of the unit from manufacture through to reconditioning.
The correct solution where the original block has suffered catastrophic damage: crankshaft journals beyond regrind tolerance, cylinder bores needing a rebore the block wall thickness cannot support, or head cracking from severe overheating. Exchange units are remanufactured to OEM specification and carry the same written warranty as an original-block reconditioning job.
Every decision at our workshop is based on measured data from the strip-down, not a visual inspection or a symptom description over the phone. Quoting for an exchange unit without stripping and measuring the original engine first is how unnecessary costs are passed to the owner. The written quote confirming the exchange unit or original-block reconditioning is provided before any further work proceeds.
A reconditioned engine needs a defined running-in period once refitted. New piston rings must bed into the freshly honed bores under controlled conditions. Running a fresh engine at full load immediately accelerates ring wear and shortens its service life.
Running-in requirements are confirmed in writing at the point of vehicle collection. These are not optional guidelines; they are the conditions under which the warranty on your reconditioned Land Rover engine remains valid.
Reconditioning is carried out at 36-A Fowler Road, Ilford IG6 3UT, covering the following models, engine codes and year ranges. If your engine code is not listed, send your registration and we will confirm availability.
Our Ilford workshop serves London and Essex directly, and we supply, deliver and arrange fitting for Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover owners across the rest of the UK. Wherever your vehicle is, we can help.
Do not see your area? We cover the whole of mainland UK for engine supply and delivery.
Send your registration and we will confirm your engine code, tell you what the likely fault is, and put the cost in writing. If the cheaper option is the right one, we will tell you that too.
Our reconditioned engines include a crankshaft regrind, new main and big end bearings, new piston rings, a timing chain kit, cylinder bore honing, a cylinder head skim and pressure test, valve stem seals, a new full gasket set, oil pump reconditioning, and post-reconditioning compression and oil pressure testing.
A used Land Rover engine is a second-hand unit of unknown wear and history. A reconditioned engine is fully stripped, measured, machined and rebuilt with new components to OEM specification. Reconditioned engines from our workshop come with a written warranty; used engines do not.
We cover the Land Rover Defender ZSD-422, Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Discovery 5, Discovery Sport and Freelander 2, across all engine codes in our inventory.
Yes. Reconditioned ZF 8-speed and ZF 6-speed automatic gearboxes are available from our Ilford workshop alongside reconditioned engines.
Every reconditioned engine from our Ilford workshop comes with a written warranty on parts and labour. Warranty terms are confirmed in writing before the reconditioning begins.
Reconditioning typically takes 2 to 4 weeks from strip-down to post-reconditioning testing. The timeline depends on the engine code, parts availability and whether machining work is required. We confirm the timeline before work starts.
Most vehicles that come to us need more than one thing looking at. These are the services most often booked alongside this one.
