Correct engine identity
Confirm the engine code and vehicle specification. Matching only by engine capacity or model badge can lead to the wrong unit.
If your Land Rover has suffered major engine failure and you need a cost-conscious replacement route, a correctly matched used engine can be an option. The important part is not simply finding another engine of the same size. Model generation, engine code, fuel system, emissions specification and supporting components all affect compatibility.
Our specialist JLR engine workshop in Ilford helps owners identify the correct Land Rover engine before purchase. We work with Defender, Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Discovery 5, Discovery Sport and Freelander 2 enquiries, with supply-only and supply-and-fit options subject to engine availability and vehicle specification.
A 2.0, 2.7 or 3.0-litre description is not enough to guarantee fitment. Send the vehicle registration, model year, mileage and any engine code or diagnosis you have so the replacement can be checked against the actual Land Rover.
A used Land Rover engine is a second-hand engine removed from another vehicle and supplied in its existing used condition. Unlike a reconditioned unit, it has not automatically been fully stripped, measured, machined and rebuilt internally. For that reason, condition, history, compatibility and the terms offered with the specific unit matter as much as the headline price.
Used engines can make sense when a vehicle needs a replacement quickly, when a correctly matched unit is available and when the owner is comfortable with the condition and terms attached to that engine. They are not the same product as a reconditioned engine, and the two should not be compared on price alone.
| Option | What you are buying | Best question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Used engine | A previously fitted engine supplied in used condition | What is known about this exact unit and what terms apply? |
| Reconditioned engine | An engine opened, assessed and restored according to the work carried out | What internal work, testing and warranty are documented? |
| Rebuild your own engine | Your original engine stripped and rebuilt where major components remain serviceable | What did the strip-down and measurement show? |
Land Rover has used several different engine families across the Defender, Discovery and Freelander ranges. The examples below reflect engine codes we regularly supply and fit. Availability of a used unit can change, so these codes should be treated as identification references rather than a promise of stock.
| Land Rover model | Engine code examples | Matching priority |
|---|---|---|
| Defender | ZSD-422 | Confirm exact Defender generation, year and specification before supply |
| Discovery 3 | 276DT, 406PN, 448PN | Check diesel/petrol application, engine code and vehicle details |
| Discovery 4 | 276DT, 306DT, 306PS, 30DDTX, 30HD0D, 508PN | Confirm code, output, ancillaries and original failure |
| Discovery 5 | 204DTA, 204DTD, 306DT, 306PS | Later JLR engines require accurate specification matching |
| Discovery Sport | 204DTA, 204DTD, 204PT, 224DT | Confirm fuel type, emissions specification and engine family |
| Freelander 2 | 204PT, 224DT | Check model year, engine code and installation details |
Send the registration and the code if you have it. Stock changes and not every suitable engine will necessarily appear in a static list.
Check current availabilityConfirm the engine code and vehicle specification. Matching only by engine capacity or model badge can lead to the wrong unit.
Clarify whether the quote is for a long engine, a more complete assembly or a unit with selected ancillaries. Do not assume turbocharger, injectors, starter, alternator, manifolds or electronics are included unless stated.
Ask what information is available for the individual engine. Where mileage or donor details cannot be evidenced, treat them as unknown rather than assumed.
Oil leaks, corrosion, damaged connectors, open ports and poor storage can create fitting problems even before the engine is started.
Used-engine cover can differ from reconditioned-engine cover. Confirm the exact terms, duration, labour position and installation requirements in writing for the specific unit.
A replacement engine can be damaged again if the original problem came from low oil pressure, cooling failure, turbocharger failure, fuel contamination or another external fault that is not corrected.
Some Land Rover engine enquiries begin after a complete breakdown; others start with warning signs that later prove to be serious internal damage. Diagnosis matters because not every smoke, warning light or loss of power means the whole engine must be replaced.
A genuine lubrication problem can damage bearings and crankshaft surfaces. If oil pressure warnings or heavy knocking are present, avoid continued driving until the cause is established.
Repeated overheating can damage head sealing and other internal components. The cooling-system fault must be corrected before a replacement engine is returned to service.
Timing chain, belt, tensioner or related faults can cause poor running or internal contact depending on the engine. The actual damage should be assessed before an engine is condemned.
Smoke, oil consumption and loss of power can originate from turbocharger or intake faults rather than the complete long engine. Secondary damage is possible, so proper diagnosis is essential.
Compression loss or a seized engine can point to serious internal wear or damage and may lead to a rebuild or replacement decision.
Our workshop is based at 36-A Fowler Road, Ilford IG6 3UT. Land Rover owners in Ilford, East London and Essex can bring the vehicle to one JLR-focused workshop for engine identification, replacement planning and fitting. Customers further away can enquire about engine delivery, vehicle collection and other transport options across mainland UK.
If your Land Rover is already with another garage, we can discuss a suitable used replacement engine once the specification has been confirmed. The installing garage should independently verify compatibility, transfer any required ancillaries correctly and address the original cause of failure before commissioning the engine.
If you want one specialist to manage the job, we can discuss a complete supply-and-fit route from our Ilford workshop. This keeps engine matching, removal, installation and post-fit checks within one job rather than splitting responsibility between an engine seller and a separate installer.
We offer collection and delivery support across the UK. Send your postcode with the vehicle registration so the available arrangement can be included in the quotation.
There is no single price for every used Land Rover engine. Cost depends on the model, engine code, condition, current availability, what is included with the unit and whether you need engine supply only or a complete fitted replacement.
A Defender engine, Discovery 4 V6 diesel and later Discovery Sport Ingenium unit have different availability and fitting requirements.
A unit with clearer provenance and documented information may be priced differently from an engine with little supporting history.
The components included with the engine can change both purchase cost and the amount of labour or parts needed during fitting.
Removal, installation, fluids, filters and associated workshop work sit outside an engine-only price.
Cooling, turbo, fuel, DPF/EGR, oil-supply or electrical faults may need separate work before the vehicle can return to service.
Send the registration, mileage, symptoms and any diagnosis already completed. We can identify the engine and explain the available used, reconditioned or rebuild route.
For local customers, our Ilford workshop provides a physical point of contact for engine matching and fitting discussions. We directly serve Ilford and surrounding East London and Essex areas, with wider UK supply and collection support available.
If you are outside the local area, send your postcode and vehicle registration so delivery or collection options can be discussed.
Buying a used engine is only one part of solving an engine failure. The replacement has to be correct for the vehicle, the reason the original engine failed has to be considered and the installation must be completed properly. Our workshop focuses on Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover engine work, combining engine matching with repair, rebuild, reconditioning and fitting options.
Send the registration and fault details first. We will check the engine specification and discuss the available replacement route before you commit.

Yes. We offer used engine options alongside reconditioned engines, rebuilds and repairs. Availability depends on the exact Land Rover model and engine specification.
Current Land Rover coverage includes Defender, Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Discovery 5, Discovery Sport and Freelander 2.
Start with the registration and engine code rather than relying on engine size alone. Model year, fuel type, engine family and supporting systems can affect compatibility.
No. A used engine is a second-hand unit supplied in used condition. A reconditioned engine has undergone documented workshop work such as inspection, measurement and component replacement according to the process carried out.
Yes, supply-and-fit service is available from the Ilford workshop. Supply-only can also be discussed if your own garage will carry out the installation.
Our 6-month warranty applies to rebuilt engines. For a used engine, any cover depends on the unit, and we confirm it in writing before you buy.
We offer UK-wide collection and delivery support. Send your postcode with the vehicle details so the available arrangement can be confirmed.
The installer should verify compatibility, inspect the replacement unit, transfer or replace required components correctly and address the cause of the original failure before commissioning the engine.
The workshop is at 36-A Fowler Road, Ilford IG6 3UT, serving Ilford, East London and Essex directly.
