Our Land Rover engine rebuild covers rebuilds on a Discovery 4 306DT, a Defender ZSD-422, a Discovery 3 276DT TDV6, a Freelander 2 224DT, a Discovery 5 204DTA Ingenium, or a classic Land Rover rebuild on a Series 2A or Series 3.

Our Land Rover engine specialists have been rebuilding engines for Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar for more than 20 years. Every rebuild starts with a complete strip-down evaluation; all internal parts are measured before a rebuild scope is confirmed or quoted.

The work is never done based on symptoms. Before ordering any part, the crankshaft journals, cylinder bores, piston ring grooves, timing chain stretch and cylinder head face condition are all measured.

Measured, not guessed

No parts are ordered and no scope is quoted until your engine is stripped and every critical clearance is checked against OEM tolerance.

You receive a documented strip-down report tied to your registration and engine number, kept as part of the vehicle's permanent record.

Land Rover models we rebuild

Every model and engine code has a different rebuild method. Here is how we approach the most common Land Rover rebuilds in our workshop.

Designed to outlast anything

The ZSD-422 diesel rebuild addresses crankshaft bearing wear, piston ring failure and timing component deterioration on high-mileage Defenders. Every rebuild features new main and big end bearings, piston rings, a timing chain kit and a complete set of new head gaskets.

276DT TDV6, 406PN & 448PN, rebuilt correctly

Three engines, three methods: the 276DT TDV6 diesel, 406PN V6 petrol and 448PN V8 petrol. The 276DT TDV6 is one of our most popular rebuilds, due to timing chain stretch from long service intervals and crankshaft bearing wear from oil starvation.

Six engine codes, one specialist

Covers 276DT, 306DT, 306PS, 30DDTX, 30HD0D and 508PN, diesel and petrol. Includes our most technically demanding rebuilds, such as the 306DT SDV6: crankshaft bearings, coolant gallery inspection for corrosion from non-OAT coolant, and cylinder head skimming where overheated.

Ingenium 204DTA & 204DTD, precision rebuilt

Ingenium 204DTA and 204DTD diesels, plus 306DT and 306PS from 2016 onwards. The 204DTA rebuild corrects timing chain tensioner failure and piston ring wear from oil pressure loss, which escalates quickly if the wrong oil specification or interval is used.

Ingenium diesel and petrol, done right

For 204DTA, 204DTD, 204PT petrol and 224DT diesel Ingenium codes from the 2014 platform. Piston rings, big end bearings, timing chain kit and head gasket set are the core of every rebuild, and are shared with the Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar F-Pace diesels.

204PT & 224DT Ingenium, fully restored

Petrol 204PT and diesel 224DT Ingenium engines from 2006 to 2014. A common issue is timing belt failure on the 224DT, which can cause catastrophic valve and piston damage without warning, requiring a full rebuild rather than a specific repair.

What every rebuild includes

The same five stages, every engine

The procedure is identical whatever the model or engine code. Specialists who cut corners do not build engines that last.

Complete engine disassembly

The engine is removed and stripped to component level. Every part, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, cylinder head, timing components, oil pump and camshafts, is separated, cleaned and laid out for individual measurement.

Component measurement and assessment

Crankshaft journals checked for wear and ovality. Cylinder bores checked for taper and out-of-round. Cylinder head faces checked for warping. Piston ring grooves measured. Timing chain stretch checked against OEM specification. This stage sets the exact scope: what is replaced, what is machined.

Machining work

Cylinder bore honing for wear within tolerance. Main bearing housing bored where distortion has occurred from bearing damage. Cylinder head skimming for Discovery 4 or Freelander 2 heads warped by overheating.

Component replacement

Every rebuild includes:

  • New crankshaft main and big end bearings, never reused, even if they appear fine
  • New piston rings on all cylinders
  • New timing chain kit: chain, tensioners, guides and sprockets where accessible
  • New head gasket set and new cylinder head bolts for every head removal
  • New oil pump where wear or an oil pressure test requires it
  • New coolant seals, O-rings and thermostat housing gaskets as standard

Reassembly and testing

Every component is reassembled to the manufacturer's torque specifications, with clearances inspected before final assembly. The engine is tested for compression, oil pressure at idle and operating temperature, and cold and warm running, all before refitting.

Classic & Series

Classic Land Rover and Series engine rebuilds

We rebuild classic Land Rover, Series 2 and Series 3 engines alongside modern rebuilds. Classic and Series-era knowledge is not the same as modern Land Rover engine knowledge.

The 2.25 petrol, 2.25 diesel, 19J diesel and 2.5 diesel engines in the Series 2, 2A and 3 have completely different requirements from the TDV6, Ingenium or SDV6. A Series 2 rebuild on the 2.25 petrol includes bearing and ring replacement, bore honing or rebore if out of tolerance, valve grinding and head gasket replacement. Many of ours have run 100,000+ miles and outlast the body around them.

A Series 3 rebuild on the 2.25 or 19J diesel also addresses the injection pump timing on the 19J: neglect it and you get a rough-running engine with heavy fuel consumption even with new internals. For early Defender 90, 110 and 130 with 200Tdi and 300TDI engines, the timing belt is a required part of the rebuild.

Know your options

Rebuild vs exchange engine

A rebuild is not an exchange unit. After the strip-down, we confirm which is right for your engine, and tell you honestly.

Rebuild your original engine

Work on your original engine yields a rebuilt engine with a documented strip-down report, measured component data and a written warranty specific to your engine and vehicle. If the block is serviceable, bore wear within limits, journals within grind tolerance, head free of cracks, this is the correct procedure. The documented history is linked to your registration and engine number, and adds value at resale.

Reconditioned exchange unit

An exchange unit is a remanufactured engine with an unknown history, installed in place of your original. If your original block is not serviceable, a reconditioned exchange unit is available. Our specialist assessment after strip-down confirms which approach is appropriate, rather than defaulting to whichever is easiest to sell.

Warranty & documentation

Every rebuild is written down

All engines rebuilt in our Ilford workshop are covered by a written warranty for parts and labour. A shop that will not put its warranty in writing is not a specialist, it is a fit shop.

Each rebuild is recorded on a specification sheet: every part replaced, every measurement taken, every machining operation, and the post-rebuild test results. Warranty claims come back to our workshop, not to a parts supplier or a third party.

Your rebuild record includes

  • Full rebuild specification
  • Every part replaced, listed
  • Machining work carried out
  • Compression & oil pressure test results
  • Kept as part of the vehicle record
