Technician recording engine details on a tablet beside an open bonnet in our Ilford workshop

Our Land Rover repairs cover the entire range: Defender, Discovery 3, 4 and 5, Discovery Sport and Freelander 2. Every repair is performed by engineers with more than 20 years on Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar engines, using Land Rover SDD diagnostic software and OEM specification parts throughout.

Repairs begin with a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation before anything is quoted or scoped. Searches for a Land Rover repair near me across East London and Essex bring owners to our workshop at 36-A Fowler Road, Ilford, IG6 3UT, where every booking is handled by a specialist who works on these engines daily.

A fault code is a starting point, not a diagnosis

We confirm the root cause with live data before touching a single part, so the repair is right the first time and the fault does not return in three months.

Land Rover models we repair

Each engine has its own set of faults. Here is what we see most often, model by model.

Land Rover Defender

ZSD-422 diesel: injectors, EGR, turbo wear

The ZSD-422 suffers injector failure, EGR valve carbon buildup, turbocharger wear and timing component deterioration at high mileage. The engine is built tough, and proper repair returns that toughness.

276DT TDV6: timing chain, EGR carbon

Three engines: 276DT TDV6, 406PN V6 petrol and 448PN V8 petrol. The most common 276DT faults are timing chain stretch and EGR valve carbon build-up, causing loss of power and rough running (2004-2009).

306DT: HP fuel pump, bearing wear

Six engine codes since 2009. The 306DT commonly needs repair for high-pressure fuel pump failure, worn crankshaft bearings, and coolant gallery corrosion from the wrong OAT coolant fitted by non-specialist garages.

204DTA / 204DTD Ingenium tensioner

Ingenium 204DTA, 204DTD, 306DT and 306PS from 2016. The 204DTA repair resolves two common issues: timing chain tensioner failure and oil pressure loss.

204DTA/DTD/PT and 224DT Ingenium

The 204DTA diesel is the same Ingenium engine as the Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar F-Pace, with the same sensitivity to oil specification we see regularly in our Ilford workshop.

204PT petrol & 224DT diesel, 2006-2014

The 204PT petrol and 224DT diesel Ingenium engines. Like the Defender, most Freelander 2 owners arrive after years at a general garage, where faults accumulated that better diagnostics would have caught earlier.

The faults we repair most, by engine

Before any repair is recommended, a full SDD system scan and live data analysis identify the root cause, not the symptom.

ZSD-422DefenderInjector failure, EGR carbon buildup, turbo wear
276DTDiscovery 3 / 4Timing chain stretch, EGR valve failure, oil pressure loss
306DTDiscovery 4 / 5High-pressure fuel pump, crankshaft bearing wear, coolant corrosion

204DTDDiscovery 5 / SportFuel injector imbalance, EGR buildup, coolant loss
224DTDiscovery Sport / Freelander 2Timing belt failure, head gasket failure, rear main seal oil leak
204PTDiscovery Sport / Freelander 2Inlet valve carbon (GDI), fuel trim deviation, oil consumption

Repairs based on correct diagnostic evidence, not assumption, give better results and lower overall cost. Find the root cause first and the fault does not recur.

Repair or rebuild

What your vehicle actually needs

A repair is not a rebuild. After a pre-repair evaluation we tell you which scope applies, in writing, before any work.

Targeted repair

Specific parts only: timing chain kit, crankshaft bearings, head gasket, turbocharger, EGR valve, where the rest of the engine is healthy. Nearly always the right call on engines with a clean service history and no overheating.

Full engine rebuild

Required when there is general wear: damaged cylinder bores, crankshaft journals needing align-boring, or piston ring failure across multiple cylinders. More common on overheated, oil-starved or long-interval engines.

Specialist, not general trade

The difference a specialist makes

We repair Defender, Discovery 3, 4, 5, Discovery Sport and Freelander 2 engines every week. Take a Discovery 4 306DT showing a P0087 code: a general garage replaces the fuel filter and clears it. We run a fuel rail pressure test, injector leak-off test and high-pressure fuel pump output test on SDD live data before touching anything.

The difference is whether the fault comes back in three months. When it does, owners from non-specialist garages find their way to us, and our team finds what was overlooked, does the proper repair, and provides a written warranty.

Parts & warranty

  • OEM or approved OE-equivalent parts only
  • No pattern parts on JLR engines
  • Written parts & labour warranty
  • Warranty work returns to us, not a supplier
  • Service history updated at every visit
What happens at our workshop

The same five steps, every repair

The identical process runs on every vehicle, whatever the model or engine code. Skipping steps is how faults get missed.

Full system scan

Land Rover SDD is linked to every control module. Active, stored and pending codes are retrieved across the engine ECU, transmission module and body electronics. A fault code is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

Live data analysis

Fuel rail pressure, injector balance rates, oil pressure at idle and load, coolant temperature, boost pressure and fuel trim are all monitored in real time. Intermittent faults with no stored code show up clearly here.

Physical inspection

Compression test on all cylinders, oil pressure at cold and operating temperature, a leak-down test where cylinder condition is in doubt, and a visual check of the oil for coolant contamination or metal particles.

Written quote

The scope and cost are agreed in writing before work begins. No parts are ordered and no labour starts until the quote is agreed.

Repair and post-repair testing

Once complete, the engine is tested for compression and oil pressure to confirm it is back within the correct operating parameters, and a road test is performed before collection.

Free, no obligation

Get a written quote before you commit to anything

Send your registration and we will confirm your engine code, tell you what the likely fault is, and put the cost in writing. If the cheaper option is the right one, we will tell you that too.

Questions

Land Rover repairs FAQs

Which models of Land Rover do you repair?

We repair all engine codes across the Defender, Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Discovery 5, Discovery Sport and Freelander 2 range at our Ilford workshop.

How is a Land Rover engine fault diagnosed?

With a thorough Land Rover SDD system scan, live data analysis and a physical inspection. The repair scope is determined after the diagnostic result, not before.

Is it cheaper to repair or rebuild a Land Rover engine?

Repairing a specific fault such as a timing chain, crankshaft bearings or head gasket is much cheaper than a full rebuild when only those components are worn. We determine the scope from our assessment.

Do you repair Land Rover Discovery engines?

Yes, all engine codes from the 276DT to the Ingenium 204DTA and 204DTD are covered at our Ilford workshop.

Will Land Rover repairs affect my warranty?

No. Under UK block exemption regulations, repairs by a qualified Jaguar and Land Rover specialist do not affect the manufacturer's warranty. The service history is updated digitally after each visit.

How can I book a Land Rover engine repair?

Call 020 8124 1303 or use the quote form on this page. Provide your model, engine code, mileage and fault, and our team will identify the most likely cause and the repairs required.
