01Cold-start timing-chain rattle
A metallic rattle on cold start can point to wear in the timing chain, guides or tensioning system. If timing becomes inaccurate, fault codes, poor running and internal contact can follow. Early diagnosis matters because a timing-system repair is very different from replacing an engine after mechanical damage has occurred.
02Low oil pressure and bearing wear
Oil-pressure warnings should never be treated as a minor dashboard issue. Oil quality, pump condition, bearing clearances and contamination need to be checked. If the engine has continued to run with inadequate lubrication, crankshaft and bearing damage can make a rebuild or replacement necessary.
03Oil dilution and repeated DPF regeneration
On diesel Ingenium applications, repeated regeneration and short-trip use can contribute to fuel dilution of the engine oil. That can reduce lubrication quality and accelerate wear. DPF operation, oil condition and service history should be reviewed as part of the diagnosis rather than looking at the engine in isolation.
04Turbocharger problems
Loss of boost, smoke, oil in the intake or turbo noise can come from the turbocharger or its oil supply and control systems. A failed turbo can also contribute to engine damage, so the cause should be addressed before another engine is installed.
05EGR and emissions-system faults
EGR and DPF faults can trigger restricted performance, warning lights and poor running without automatically meaning the engine has failed. Proper diagnostics help avoid replacing a mechanically serviceable engine because of an emissions-system problem.
06Overheating, coolant loss and head damage
Cooling-system faults can lead to cylinder-head distortion, gasket failure and loss of compression. The source of coolant loss should be found before a replacement engine is returned to service.
07Compression loss, smoke or hard starting
Poor compression can result from cylinder, piston, ring or valve-related wear. Smoke and hard starting can also be caused by injectors, turbo or emissions faults, so compression and supporting-system checks should be part of the assessment.
