Our Ilford workshop is home to a team of Range Rover engine rebuild specialists with more than 20 years of experience on Range Rover, Land Rover and Jaguar engines. A Range Rover engine rebuild on a Sport, Evoque, Velar or Vogue means a complete internal engine restoration: all worn parts are removed, measured, machined and rebuilt to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specification using genuine parts. Every rebuild we carry out is backed by a parts and labour warranty.

A rebuild is the answer when internal engine wear is beyond repair or service. Worn crankshaft bearings, a stretched timing chain, worn piston rings, worn cylinder bores and head gasket damage are all signs of a rebuild, not a repair. A specialist with 20 years of experience on these engines will advise you what rebuild is required before any work begins.

Some owners search for Range Rover engine reconditioning as an alternative, but we suggest a full rebuild as the better option when internal damage involves the crankshaft, cylinder bores or timing components. Reconditioning gives surface-level restoration, while a rebuild goes deeper.

Measured, not guessed

No parts are ordered and no scope is quoted until your engine is stripped and every critical clearance is checked against OEM tolerance.

You receive a documented strip-down report tied to your registration and engine number, kept as part of the vehicle's permanent record.

By model

Range Rover models we rebuild

Every model and engine code has a different rebuild method. Here is how we approach a Range Rover engine rebuild on the Sport, Evoque, Velar and Vogue.

Range Rover Sport

Sport performance rebuilt from the inside out

Covers all Sport engines 276DT, 306DT, 30HD0D, 448DT and 508PS, across every Sport model from the L320 to the L494. The most common issues are worn crankshaft bearings on the 3.0 TDV6 and 3.6 TDV8, stretched timing chains on the 2.0 Ingenium petrol, and worn piston rings on high-mileage 5.0 V8 supercharged engines. Every Sport rebuild includes complete disassembly, bore measurement, crankshaft inspection, a new timing chain kit and re-assembly to Land Rover OEM standards.

Range Rover Evoque

Small footprint, big rebuild precision

Applies to the Ingenium engine family in the Evoque codes 204DTA, 204DTD, 204PT and 224DT, petrol and diesel. The most common rebuild is for timing chain stretch on the 2.0 Ingenium, a direct result of long oil change intervals or the wrong oil grade. Piston ring wear and low oil pressure are the other main causes on high-mileage diesels. Every Evoque rebuild involves full Ingenium disassembly, a new timing chain kit (tensioners and guides), new piston rings and bearings, and compression testing before re-installation.

Range Rover Velar

Quality engineering deserves a quality rebuild

Includes the Velar engines 204DTA, 204DTD, 306DT and 306PS Ingenium units and the 3.0 SDV6. On Ingenium-powered Velars the common work is timing chain stretch and low oil pressure from bearing wear. On the 3.0 SDV6 it is crankshaft bearing wear, coolant gallery corrosion from incorrect OAT coolant, and injector seal failure. Each Velar rebuild is tailored to the engine code after a pre-rebuild compression test, oil analysis and complete strip-down inspection.

Range Rover Vogue

The flagship Range Rover, rebuilt to flagship standard

Applies to the entire Vogue range 306DT, 30HD0D, 448DT, 508PN and 508PS across the Mk3 L322 and Mk4 L405. The 3.6 and 4.4 TDV8 typically need crankshaft bearing and oil pump work; the 3.0 TDV6 needs timing chain, EGR contamination and coolant gallery attention; the 5.0 V8 supercharged needs piston rings and head skimming at high mileage. Every Vogue rebuild involves a full strip-down, align boring if needed, a new timing chain kit, crankshaft bearings, head gasket set and compression testing before final approval.

The full process

A Range Rover engine rebuild, step by step

The process is identical for every specialist who works on these engines here, whether it is a 2.0 Ingenium diesel from an Evoque or a 5.0 V8 supercharged from a Vogue.

Engine strip-down

The engine is removed from the Range Rover and completely disassembled. All internal components, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, cylinder head, timing, oil pump and camshafts, are cleaned and measured.

Engine assessment and measurement

Journal wear and ovality are checked. Cylinder bores are checked for taper and ovality. Cylinder heads are checked for flatness. Piston ring grooves are checked for wear. This inspection determines the work required, which parts need to be replaced and what needs to be machined.

Machining work

Honing the cylinder bores where bore wear is acceptable, align boring the main bearing housing if crankshaft bearing wear has distorted it, and skimming the cylinder head if the head face has warped due to overheating.

Component replacement

Every rebuild in our workshop covers:

  • New crankshaft main bearings and big end bearings, never re-used, no matter how good they look
  • New piston rings for all cylinders
  • New timing chain kit (chain, tensioners, guides, sprockets) on every engine where timing components are removed
  • New head gasket set and new head bolts where the head is removed
  • New oil pump when wear or an oil pressure test indicates replacement
  • New coolant seals, O-rings and thermostat housing gaskets as standard

Engine reassembly

All fasteners are tightened to OEM torque values. Clearances are checked on bearings before final assembly. Timing is set to the manufacturer's specification for each engine code (306DT, 204DTA, TDV8, 508PS or Ingenium), as they all vary.

Pre-delivery testing

Every rebuild goes through a compression test on all cylinders, oil pressure at idle and at operating temperature, and cold and warm running, all before the engine is installed back into the vehicle.

Rebuild, not repair

Signs your Range Rover engine needs a rebuild

A rebuild is required when the engine's internal components have worn to a point where they cannot be replaced individually. These are the seven most common signs a rebuild is needed.

A rebuild following any of these symptoms requires an engine assessment first. We perform the assessment, scope the rebuild and issue a quote from our Ilford workshop before any work is started.

Cost & warranty

Range Rover engine rebuild cost and warranty

Cost is based on three variables: the engine code, the level of wear found during the strip-down assessment, and which parts need to be machined as well as replaced.

For owners confused between a Range Rover engine replacement and a Range Rover engine rebuild: a professional rebuild with a documented strip-down report and a written warranty will consistently outperform a replacement.

After the rebuild

Running in your Range Rover after an engine rebuild

Running in a rebuilt engine is a defined process, not a recommendation. Whether it is a 2.0 Ingenium on an Evoque or a 5.0 V8 on a Vogue, the engine needs a period of running-in before it is subjected to full driving loads.

The documentation supplied with your rebuild includes the rebuild specification, components replaced, machining performed and post-rebuild test results. This forms part of the vehicle's service history and aids resale value.

The first 500 miles

  • Do not drive at high revs or over 60 mph on the motorway
  • Avoid towing during the break-in period
  • Check the oil level every 200 miles; a new engine may use a little as the rings seat
  • Have the oil and filter changed at 500 miles to flush out bedding-in particles

Questions

Range Rover engine rebuild FAQs

How long does it take to rebuild a Range Rover engine?

The average time for a Range Rover engine rebuild is 2 to 4 weeks. Disassembly and inspection take 3 to 5 days, sourcing parts takes 3 to 7 days depending on engine code, and machining and reassembly take 1 to 2 weeks. We provide a written estimate of the time frame.

Is a Range Rover engine rebuild worth it?

Yes. A rebuild on a Sport, Evoque, Velar or Vogue returns the original engine to OEM specification with a known history. A car with a rebuilt engine, good body and gearbox is worth much more than a car with a seized or worn engine.

What does a Range Rover engine rebuild involve?

Our rebuild includes new crankshaft main bearings, big end bearings, piston rings, timing chain kit, head gasket set, head bolts and oil pump if necessary. Single-use parts, bearings, head bolts, head gaskets and timing tensioners are never reused.

Is there a warranty on a Range Rover engine rebuild?

Yes. All Range Rover engine rebuilds at our Ilford workshop are covered by a parts and labour warranty. The warranty is agreed in advance and recorded on the job sheet.

When should I rebuild or repair my Range Rover?

We carry out a pre-rebuild assessment by testing compression and oil pressure and stripping the engine down to confirm whether a rebuild is required or a repair will fix the problem. We do this before providing a quote.

Will you come to collect my Range Rover for an engine rebuild?

Contact us to discuss collection. We offer Range Rover engine rebuilds across East London and the UK from our Ilford workshop.
